Before the open home: make a shortlist that works for you
A little preparation makes a day of Auckland viewings easier to compare. Start with your everyday life, then use each visit to test whether a home fits it.
Choose three essentials
Write down the three things your next home needs to make possible. That might be a workable commute, space to work from home or an outdoor area you will use. Keep a separate list of preferences so an appealing finish does not distract from what matters most.
Plan a realistic route
Check viewing times and allow time between properties. Arrive with the address, listing details and a short list of questions. If you cannot attend an advertised viewing, contact the listing agent about the available options.
Keep the same notes for every home
After each visit, record what worked, what did not and what you need to find out. Think about the rooms you use every day, storage and how the layout would work with your furniture. Note questions while the visit is fresh, rather than relying on memory later.
Leave room for a second look
A promising viewing is a starting point. Ask the agent for the available property information and arrange the professional advice and checks appropriate to your situation before making a commitment.
